The area now know as Plains, Montana was formed by glacial actions and later by the ancient Glacial Lake Missoula. Near what is now Sandpoint Idaho, glaciers damned the Clark Fork River creating a large body of water. This lake filled and released its water many times directly affecting the appearance of western Montana.
Plains, Montana was once covered with native grasses and was used by the Native American Tribes to winter horses.
